The Government of India has drawn up a plan to develop the Lakshadweep islands as a tourist hub. The plan, which involves an investment of over Rs 3,600 crore, will include more ports, peripheral roads and beachfront facilities, among others, in infrastructure upgrades

Port facilities will be developed at Androth, Kalpeni, and Kadamat islands. Beachfront and peripheral roads will come up at Kadamat Island (East), Agatti Island (East), and Kavaratti Island. Funds for these and other projects will be met through the Sagarmala scheme for port development. In all, 13 projects have been identified for the 36 Lakshadweep islands, covering 32 sq. km, 220-440 km off the Kerala coast in the Arabian Sea

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman indicated in an interim budget that to meet the growing demand for domestic tourism, projects for port connection, tourism infrastructure, and amenities will be undertaken on islands such as Lakshadweep. This will also assist to generate employment. boasts scenic beaches and coral islands, but it lacks the necessary infrastructure and services to host a large number of tourists

Launched in July 2015, Sagarmala is the flagship central sector scheme of the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways for promoting port-led development in the country. According to Ports, Shipping, and Waterways Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, 171 projects worth Rs 4,525 crore have been supported under Sagarmala for partial funding. Out of these, 55 have been completed. There are over 800 projects worth investment of Rs 5.8 lakh crore for implementation under the scheme

241 projects worth Rs 1.22 lakh crore have been completed. The focus is harnessing India's 7,500 km coastline, 14,500 km of potentially navigable waterways, and strategic location on key international maritime trade routes
